IGNRyan McCaffreyOct 201710/10Mario's games have been around for almost as long as game consoles have been a thing, but thankfully, he's always evolving. We rarely get the same Mario twice. Super Mario Odyssey delivers on that ongoing promise of originality and innovation: It distills the venerable series' joyful, irreverent world and characters and best-in-class platforming action, and introduces a steady stream of new and unexpected mechanics. It's all spun together into a generational masterpiece.

CDavis_GamesChris DavisJan 20183/5 starsOdyssey is certainly not a bad game. While much of the content is boring, Mario controls wonderfully which lets you create your own fun. The 2D sections are entertaining distractions and the nostalgia-bait in Metro Kingdom even made me smile and that hasn’t happened since 2011. However, following a dog around and ground-pounding on the dirt he digs up isn’t what I want from a 3D platformer or a Mario game. Odyssey is there for you whenever you need a moon-generating playground to mess about in. You can pick it up and play it whenever you like. Go ahead, give it a quick go. You’ll get a moon.

FourFaceButtonsDavid AedoNov 20177/10There is a major lack of challenge for the entire adventure and I feel as though this is due strictly to its non-linear approach. The levels are basically a collection of miniature open world maps and exploration becomes the objective rather than the driving force. It's only thanks to Mario's charm and excellent controls that the game is still manages a standard of excellence, but it falls short of what previous games have achieved.
