Pure NintendoTrevor GouldFeb 20187/10Taken on its own merits as a spinoff, Kirby Battle Royale is a pretty good game. I think kids especially will enjoy its colorful looks and gentler challenge, even more so if they have friends to enjoy it with for local multiplayer.

Like a pastry, the game is mostly empty calories and air. But it's still satisfying, even if it isn't filling, and makes for a happy addition to my 3DS library.

Its mini-games are well designed, but with a short Story Mode and limited replay value for its other modes, it becomes clear that this is not a stellar addition to an already bulging line-up. Kirby fans are probably better off saving for a Switch as the pink puffball is heading there next year.
