GamingBoltJoelle DanielsFeb 20269/10Despite its surprise release, it delivers a strong overall experience. The platforming feels tight and responsive, and the combat stands out with satisfying spear-and-shield mechanics that keep encounters engaging throughout.

GamesCreedMahi ArafFeb 20264.5/5God of War: Sons of Sparta is still a great addition to the series, both as a case study and as a genre experiment. It doesn’t change God of War, but it does make it deeper by reminding players that there was once a brother behind the god and the monster, trying to do the right thing.

Life is XboxFeb 202685/100God of War: Sons of Sparta proves to be a challenging, but worthy entry into the God of War franchise. While it doesn’t retain some of the previous games’ highlights with its big flashy boss fights, and gorgeous cinematics, it does stand out from the crowd by bringing a new art style, co-op, and deeper explanation of the story between Kratos and Deimos, and their unrelenting journey through Sparta. With the return of Terrence C. Carson, fans of the God of War series, old and new will have a fantastic time listening to the narration of what drove Kratos to becoming the God of War.

ShacknewsLucas WhiteMar 20264/10Sauceless combat, a do-nothing story, and striking lack of personality don’t do any favors to a novel premise and quality voice acting that gave an initially promising first impression. A God of War Metroidvania could have been a productive and exciting use of the IP, especially in a post-Silksong world, but Sons of Sparta doesn’t have a fraction of that juice.

GameSpotSteve WattsMar 20265/10But it's difficult to recommend, because so much of the metroidvania design--the core of the genre that Kratos has found himself in--is like that frozen wasteland: slowly plodding through, just trying to reach the next warm spot where it's fun again.
