Richly built, dark, plot-driven and unpretentious.

PC, PS5, Xbox; Rebellion DevelopmentsInspired by the 1957 Windscale fire, Rebellion’s open-world adventure features an interesting mystery, but suffers from middling combat, poor stealth and an underutilised setting
Digital SpyBen RaynerMar 20255/5 starsAtomfall is a distinctly British take on the sci-fi apocalypse, but it’s so much more than that. The different parts of the game work together to provide the player an open-ended experience that’s both thrilling and rewarding, in a harsh world that’s begging to be explored.

Thumb CultureApr 20255/5 starsSo, what do I think of Atomfall in general? It’s bloody brilliant. I’ve enjoyed so much of my time playing through the game and I’ll probably go back and explore some more. Its environments and characters make the world breathe with life. Add a sprinkling of mystery with what happened at the Windscale Nuclear Plant. Atomfall easily receives the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.

Hardcore GamerParker GreenMar 20252.5/5Atomfall falls flat in its attempts to homage and recreate the magic of other apocalyptic survival games. The storytelling and level design might keep players interested enough to make it through the main story, but the lack of depth in gameplay and role-playing makes it hard to imagine anyone wanting to spend their time playing Atomfall over any other successful title in the genre.

Digital TrendsGiovanni ColantonioMar 20252.5/5 starsIn its latest action-adventure game, Sniper Elite developer Rebellion lays out a solid plan to thrive in a wasteland of nuclear apocalypse games. Rather than aping Fallout or Stalker’s action RPG formula, the more streamlined Atomfall scavenges together some original ideas in its deconstructed quests and an emphasis on bartering. That could have made for a compelling survival story built around open-ended exploration, but it’s those pesky details that will get you killed during a nuclear disaster.
