With nods to Bladerunner and an isometric design that harks back to Amiga games, this could be great fun if the campaign mode wasn’t so tricky
Saving ContentHarry HarrisonMay 20175/5 starsAs of writing this, Tokyo 42 is my game of the year. Sure it has its small quirks but there’s nothing here that hasn’t stopped me from loving every hour playing and exploring this world. My very frequent deaths while trying to fight the waves of the final boss aren’t arduous or disheartening, but rather energised by the immediate reloads and desire to get to the bottom of the plot. I personally cannot wait to see where SMAC Games takes Tokyo 42 and where they go next.

DestructoidRaymond PorrecaMay 20178.5/10Even with the occasional camera-related annoyance and a couple of less-than-stellar timed platforming challenges, Tokyo 42 is a thrilling game.

Cubed3Albert LichiOct 20173/10There is a lot that goes wrong with Tokyo 42. This was a concept that had so much promise but is held back by terrible design choices and technical issues.

TechRaptorSamuel GuglielmoJun 20173.5/10While I was originally extremely excited for Tokyo 42's stylistic cyberpunk world, I found myself dreading it after an hour or two. The city may look great, but it gets in the way of the game itself. Combine this with a poor aiming system, crazy difficulty spikes, and an uninteresting multiplayer, and you're left with a game that rarely manages to be enjoyable.
