VG247Alex DonaldsonFeb 20255/5 starsIn that sense, Avowed is perfect proof of a great proof in all game design and in the execution of all art: you sometimes don’t need to pitch a revolution. Instead, you just need to have something to say, and then use the established tools and concepts to say it well.

Checkpoint GamingLuke MitchellFeb 20259.5/10Avowed is impressive in almost everything it sets out to do. It has sharp writing, captivating companions, an intriguing story and a varied world that is just thrilling to explore. It's visually stunning, too, with high production values including satisfying audio that makes the Living Lands feel bustling with life. Where many games falter in offering "bigger and more", Avowed smartly focuses on its strengths, making for a breezy yet vibrant RPG that feels polished and intelligent, offering lots to do but never outstaying its welcome. Obsidian Entertainment has once again proven they are skilled storytellers, offering a must-play adventure for anyone who has a love for the fantastical.

COGconnectedMark SteighnerFeb 202593/100Thanks to its legacy of the excellent Pillars of Eternity games, Avowed is built on a strong foundation. That comes through in every aspect of the game, from its deep lore to its exceptional world-building, characters, and writing. Smartly avoiding the pitfalls of an empty open world, it gives the players densely interesting zones to explore, weighty choices to make, and engaging companions to rely on. Avowed takes the Pillars of Eternity universe on an assured and thoroughly enjoyable journey from CRPG to the action genre.

Final WeaponSaras RajpalMar 20252/5 starsDespite Obsidian's incredible history with the RPG genre, Avowed unfortunately comes up short compared to their previous games. Even if the gameplay foundation is very addicting, the lack of any meaningful story, dialogue, narrative decisions, and an overabundance of necessary XP grinding and technical issues lead the game to embody the worst parts of the genre. Sadly, it fails to stick out in comparison to games such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Baldur's Gate 3.

Niche GamerFingal BelmontMar 20255/10Avowed has its moments when players are invading a camp full of thugs and monsters, where the sparks can fly and the blades can clash. Between those moments are insufferable dialogues with a cast of characters you won’t care for, in a setting that never feels convincing. It’s a shallow and dumb game that could be a guilty pleasure if you got it for $20.
