Epic, richly built, meticulous and plot-driven.
20 profiled raters. Loved most by The Cartographers; disliked most by The Provocateurs.
We read them all: the case for is cartographer_cy's, the case against is yuki.reads's. Marked below.
The book, not the film: the film is a very expensive trailer for it. Herbert's politics are a mess and the mess is the point. Read the appendices.
The film's Arrakis is the first one that felt like a planet and not a set. Villeneuve shoots scale the way Herbert wrote it: slowly, and then all at once.
Solid, and in places better than solid. The sheer scope of it is breathtaking. Straight-faced throughout, and all the stronger for it.
The book is a machine for thinking about ecology and religion at once. Villeneuve's film understood the scale; the book understood the cost.
