Seven hundred pages of suffering arranged for maximum effect. It works, and I resent that it works. Three stars for craft, minus one for manipulation, plus one because I finished it at 4am.
Cruel in a way that dares you to call it manipulative, and I did, and then I kept reading. Yanagihara knows exactly what she is doing to you. Whether that is a virtue is the whole argument.
